The Fall Frizz Factor

Temperatures are finally cooling down, and we're headed for fall-It's time to dig out the sweaters, scarves, and boots. Along with cute fall fashion, autumn brings its own particular set of curl woes to contend with, and at the top of that list is: Frizz. But what causes fall frizz? Ouidad Artistic Team Educator Genevieve Rosemary is breaking it down, so grab your pumpkin spiced latte and take some notes.

Long Live Summer

Saltwater and chlorine can cause mineral build-up that prevents hair from absorbing and retaining moisture. The longer the mineral build-up stays in your hair, the drier and more brittle it will become. At home, use Water Works Clarifying Shampoo to remove impurities left by pool and sea, followed by Ultra-Nourishing Intense Hydrating Mask to balance moisture and repair damage.

The surest way to say goodbye to summer is to cut it off! If you haven't already booked, schedule an appointment with your Certified Ouidad Stylist and curl expert for a haircut to freshen up your tresses and treat yourself to our signature in salon Deep Treatment to restore protein and balance moisture.

Cold Air Outside, Dry Air Inside

Cooler temperatures and shortened days cause us all to migrate indoors. Spending more time indoors means more time in dryer, artificially-heated air, and more time in dryer air equals dryer hair. Dry air inside and cold air outside can leach moisture from your hair, and unless you have a whole-house humidifier, you'll have to use topical products to combat fall frizz.

Think: When is the last time you switched up your shampoo and conditioner? Frizz-free curls are made from the ground up, meaning that the products you use to cleanse and condition your hair make a huge impact in how your curls are preserved. Fall is a great time to switch to a more moisturizing regimen.

Cleanse with a gentle moisturizing shampoo, like Ultra-Nourishing Cleansing Oil Shampoo. This gentle, restorative, oil-based cleanser uses skincare technology to remove excess oil and impurities and mimic hair's natural lipid barrier.

Condition with a deep penetrating conditioner like Coil Infusion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner, which works to restore and moisturize with avocado, grapeseed, and coconut oil.

Dry Hair and Humidity

In some areas, autumn brings more humid weather, and if hair is dry, it will drink it up (cue: frizz). To combat frizz, it's imperative that you protect your hair from heat, lock out humidity, and seal in moisture. The entire Advanced Climate Control collection is designed to do just that! Style using Advanced Climate Control Featherlight Styling Cream (for a softer, more lived-in look); Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel (for medium hold, defined style); Or Advanced Climate Control Gel Stronger Hold (for a stronger hold, longer-lasting style).

Seal The Deal

Once your curls are adequately hydrated, seal your ends and finish your style with one of our penetrating oils. Apply Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Curl Treatment, a multi-purpose oil, to nourish, protect, add shine, and tame frizz. Or, try Revive & Shine Rejuvenating Dry Oil Mist, which uses watermelon seed and mongongo oil to condition strands and delivers deep hydration. Argan, walnut, and avocado oils restore shine and nutrients. As a bonus, both oils can penetrate the hair strand and have built-in UV and thermal protection!

Lastly, try to skip a wash day or two to preserve your hair's natural moisture. Instead, try using a spray like Advanced Climate Control Restore & Revive Bi-Phase to refresh your second, third, or even fourth-day curls!
