4 Tips for Summer Curl Care

Summer is in full swing and although we're still in the middle of a pandemic, we can still participate in some summer fun safely-the goal is to do so without compromising our curls. Sea water, chlorine and the sun can wreak havoc on our hair, so it's important to make small changes throughout the summer months to save the integrity of our curls. I'm sharing a few helpful tips and tricks that can save you and your curls a big headache (and frizz induced mop) once the summer is over!

Tip #1 Rinse & Condition Before Swimming

To protect your curly hair from chlorine or sea water, you'll need to create a barrier to prevent the aggressors from penetrating your strands. As an easy precaution, wet hair with clean water and apply a deep conditioner or oil before entering the pool or ocean. When the hair is saturated beforehand, it won't soak up the harmful waters as much. Try using the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Conditioner or the Ultra-Nourishing Intense Hydrating Mask-both will give your curls an extra boost of moisture and coat the strands with natural oils. If you're looking to try an oil, the Mongongo Oil is incredible for its healing properties.

Tip #2 Rinse & Re-Condition After Swimming

Be sure to rinse hair out with clean water after you go for a dip. I would suggest slathering even more conditioner or oil after doing so if you plan to stay outside, especially in the sun. Try letting your hair air-dry, as well. The summer heat can actually help open up the cuticle to allow the treatment to further penetrate into your strands. Win, win.

Tip #3 UV Protection

Fact: If your skin can get sunburned, so can your strands! Incorporating products with UV protection are crucial to protecting your strands against sun damage during the summer months. I love using the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control collection because each product is infused with UV protection against environmental aggressors.

If you plan to be out in the sun for an extended period of time (over 3 hours), be sure to wear a hat or scarf for extra protection. I can always rest easy knowing my hair is covered...literally.

Tip #4 Keep Your Conditioners Cool

One thing I love doing during the hot summer months is keeping my conditioners and masks in the refrigerator. The cooling effect will lock in moisture and seal the cuticle, keeping frizz at bay. Bonus: It feels so refreshing on your scalp!
