Curly Hair Is More Prone to Damage
Curly hair is typically more prone to breakage and damage than other hair types due to its shape. All curls have natural arcs and angles that form their beautiful shape, but also allow moisture and nutrients to escape more easily than other hair patterns. Therefore, it’s important to find products designed with your curls in mind. Ouidad products are formulated to address the common challenges for all curls that can lead to breakage (think: loss of moisture, definition, inconsistent curl patterns, and frizz). We’ve developed professional-quality collections made with good-for-curl ingredients and backed by decades of stylist knowledge to address your specific curl type needs.
Common Causes of Hair Breakage
Although not the only reasons, color and heat damage are common culprits behind hair breakage and can be tricky to repair.
Curly Hair Damage Control
Frequent trims:
One of the most effective ways to keep your curls healthy is to trim any damage or split ends regularly. In time, leaving split ends can lead to bigger, long-term damage that can impede new hair growth. For loose curls, aim to visit your stylist every 6-8 weeks. For tighter curls, stop by the salon at least every three months. Getting rid of any damage at the bottom of your curls can also help the hair retain the moisture it needs. It’s essential that you find a stylist who is properly trained in cutting curly hair—and lucky for you, Ouidad has hundreds of certified stylists across the country who would love to help!
Reducing heat exposure:
At Ouidad, we believe in styling your hair however makes you feel the most confident, but by reducing the frequency in which you apply heat onto your curls, you can help to reduce some major damage.
If you are planning to use heat, we recommend that you always prep your curls with one of our protective primers. Our Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Treatment is rich in omega-6 fatty acids that promote hair health and can be applied before heat styling to help prevent heat damage.
You can also use our Advanced Climate Control® Detangling Heat Spray, which primes and helps protect against damage caused by heat styling and UV rays, while also helping to stop frizz before it starts with our Anti-Frizz Nano Technology™.
If you’ve already styled your curls for the next few days, consider using our Advanced Climate Control® Restore + Revive Bi-Phase as a refreshing spray, which includes a dedicated UV filter to help prevent sun damage.
Using the right products for your curls:
One of the leading causes of damaged hair is dehydrated hair, and knowing curls become dehydrated easier than other curl types, it’s essential that curls get the moisture they need to thrive. However, the amount of moisture your curls need will depend on your own specific curl type. Luckily, Ouidad makes products for all curl types and textures to make it easy to find your optimal curl routine.
Use our Curl Shaper range to add in weightless moisture to Loose Curls & Waves, as well as finer hair types.
Use our VitalCurl® + collection for lightweight hydration on Spiral Curls, as well as fine-to-medium hair textures.
Use our Curl Quencher® products to replenish your Tight Curls with moisture, as well as for medium-to-thick curl textures.
Use our Coil Infusion® line to add rich hydration to coils, and medium-to-thick textures.
Use Our Advanced Climate Control® range to add balanced moisture into all curl types and textures.
Hair masks are also a great way to replenish curls with moisture. Our Ultra-Nourishing Intense Hydrating Mask is infused with argan oil to replenish moisture and essential nutrients which strengthens and repairs curls. The mask has a creamy formula with slip that detangles hair to help prevent breakage and restore softness, elasticity, and shine. Once a week, apply the mask to wet hair in the shower and leave it on for up to five minutes before rinsing.
