Curly Hairstyles for Rainy Days

Curly Hairstyles for Rainy Days

Rainy days present some inevitable challenges, but your curls don’t have to be one of them. In order to combat the humidity brought by rain, fizz fighting products are essential to keeping hair smooth and defined. Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control® line is the perfect way to fight frizz, lock in moisture and lock out humidity for any curl type. With the right hairstyles and products in your arsenal, your curls will thrive no matter the weather!

Here are five great hairstyles for people with curls that are perfect for rainy days.

Fishtail Braid Hairstyles for Curly Hair

A fishtail braid is an easy style that can make it look like you've spent hours on your hair. This elegant braid holds best with textured, curly hair and hair that's been detangled and prepped. Use Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Curl Treatment to retain moisture and keep your locks healthy and hydrated before you get started.

Once your hair is prepped and ready to braid, follow these steps:

  • Gather your hair to the side or in the back of your head and divide it into two even sections.
  • Holding a section of hair in each hand, take a small strand of hair from the outside of the left section and pull it up and across that section and tuck it under the right section, gathering it with the rest of the hair in your right hand.
  • Repeat the same motion, only this time take the hair from the outside of the right section and move it to the left.
  • Continue moving strands of hair, alternating sides until you reach the bottom and then secure your hair with a hair tie as you would with a normal braid.

Keep in mind that fishtail braids look great when they're a bit messy, so don't strive for perfection. Get creative with the size of the strands you pull across to create the braid until you find a look you feel great about.

Space Buns for Curly Hair

Space buns are two buns that sit at the top of your head. This style is great for textured hair, helping to keep hair off your face and stay secure all day (even in harsh weather).

The space buns hairstyle is easy to achieve; just follow these steps:

  • Create two buns of equal size at the top of your head, a couple of inches above each ear.
  • Secure your buns with hair ties and bobby pins if necessary.

To add to this look, consider leaving a few strands loose near the front of your hair to frame your face.

Half-Up Space Buns

Half-up space buns feature smaller space buns with the bottom half of the hair left down and loose. This style is a great way to showcase your curls while protecting the top layers from rain.

To achieve it, divide the top of your hair from the bottom. Follow the steps listed above for space buns to style the upper half of your hair and style the lower half as you normally would. Complete your look with a few spritzes of Advanced Climate Control® Restore + Revive Bi-Phase, infused with Anti-Frizz Nano Technology™ to achieve shiny, hydrated curls—no matter the climate, on the bottom half of hair.

High Puff Hairstyles

If you've got tight, coily curls, a high puff is a great way to showcase them on a rainy day. This style keeps your curls in one place.

Before you get started, we suggest priming your hair with Curl Recovery® Whipped Curls® Daily Conditioner & Styling Primer to nourish and define your curls.

Here's how to style a high puff:

You can vary the look of your puff by adding braids or changing the placement of your headband.

Messy Bun

A messy bun is a quick and easy way to protect your curls from the rain without damage — provided you use the right products and styling tools. The resulting look is comfortable and classic.

Here's how to do it:

  • Prepare and protect your hair using Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Curl Treatment. Apply it to damp or dry hair by warming a few drops between your palms and applying it to the ends of your locks.
  • Add texture to your hair by spraying it with Stylutions® Going Up! Volumizing Texture Spray and use a wide-toothed comb to pull your hair back into a ponytail. Use a silk or coiled hair tie to secure it comfortably without causing damage. When pulling your hair through the hair tie, only pull it halfway through on the last wrap.
  • Tuck loose strands back into the elastic and use bobby pins to pin sections of the bun to your head at random intervals leaving a few strands loose to wrap around the bun and pin to the underside.

Master Your Rainy-Day Look

Rain and humidity can make it difficult to style and maintain curly looks, but thankfully, there are ways to keep your locks looking incredible even when the weather isn't cooperating. In addition to trying these curly hairstyles, incorporate Advanced Climate Control® Frizz-Fighting Hydrating Mask into your regular routine to keep your curls hydrated and free of frizz in any climate.
