What are your favorite product combinations?

I love a lot of volume in curly hair. To get nice volume, I style the hair with as little hold as possible; I essentially use a conditioner as the styling aid. I like to use Moisture Lock Leave In Conditioner and Styling Mist to create this look. I work in Moisture Lock through the curls with the “Rake and Shake” styling technique and then spray the Styling Mist over the style and let it dry. When the hair is completely dry, I shake it out to get the extra volume.

What is the biggest challenge that you hear from clients and how do you resolve it?

The biggest challenge I see most clients encounter is frizz. 9 out of 10 times it’s because they run their fingers through their hair too often. The best advice I can give is to not do this when the hair is drying or completely dry.

What is the quickest technique to "Rake and Shake"?

I section the hair from the bottom up and when working product in, I make sure that the sections are smooth then pull all the way to the ends and then let the sections drop. What this does is smoothes the fly-aways because the hair is wet and it can hold the hair together and create the definition in the curl.

What inspired you to be a hairstylist?

I love hair! From my earliest memory at 5 years old, I can remember putting all my hair in barrettes, putting them in my Dad’s hair, and doing my sisters hair before heading to school. I have always had to schedule doing someone’s hair into my day to day routine. After trying to follow my sister’s footsteps (who is a doctor), I started nursing school at one point. After realizing that I was not happy, I decided to do what I love, and that’s hair! So, I left nursing school and went to beauty school which changed my life for the better.

What is your secret product tip for great curls?

The best tip that I can give a curly hair person is that deep conditioning is the best thing to help your curls perform the way you want them to. We moisturize our skin every day to keep the elasticity and we need to do the same for our hair to keep it’s elasticity, luster and to avoid breakage.
