Ouidad-The Secret to That Perfect Curl or Sexy Fall Wave It's that romantic notion a woman has embraced in the movies for decades; dressed in a beautiful evening gown, she floats into the candle-lit room, her hair flowing like a perfect waterfall; hand-in-hand with the handsome man. If you're anything like me, perhaps you've wondered how these women manage to get all that hair into the perfect 'look'. Being blessed with long, thick, and curly-in-some-spots hair, I've spent a lifetime 'in battle' with the ringlets that seemingly only want to be ringlet-like underneath the otherwise wavy tresses. The weight of my hair keeps much of the curl straightened; but for some reason, they're as curly as Shirley Temple's on the bottom layer. So it's a year round dilemma unless you've already found out about Ouidad. Situated in Manhattan and on trendy Montana Avenue in LA's Santa Monica, Ouidad is a hair salon where your curls are everyone's best friend. Ouidad herself is the salon owner who's also a renowned hair stylist, global educator, curl maestro and industry icon. Ouidad is 'The Curl Expert' and since 1984 she's made it her business to care-for-the-curl. Known as the Queen of Curl," Ouidad is the official connoisseur in maintaining and styling curly hair... Morgan the amazing stylist began by treating me to Ouidad's exclusive Carve and Slice cut, followed by the Softening System and ending with a photo shoot worthy styling... The Ouidad exclusive softening system uses half the amount of processing ingredients in combination with a deep treatment that is tailored to each client. Results are looser curl patterns that allow for a completely customized curl or wave. The process includes a complete analysis of one's individual curl pattern, gentle treatment application and Deep treatment sealing/conditioning... Indeed, it tamed my tresses and left me with that perfect wave I longed for!

Stay a Little Longer Curls: If you want to maintain curl, your hair has to be pliable, not dry or brittle, says Ouidad, a stylist and salon owner in New York City. So whether your hair is naturally straight, wavy, or curly (and you just want more defined coils), here's the lock tight technique: Start by shampooing and conditioning with moisturizing formulas, then spritz a flexible hold hair spray onto your damp hair. This will create a slightly sticky foundation on which to set curls. Most stylists recommend setting hair in large velcro rollers, because they're easy to slip in and out without damaging hair. If your hair is short, pin curls work equally well; create them by twisting small sections of hair and securing them to your scalp with bobby pins. Then air-dry or blow-dry until no moisture remains, unravel the rollers of the pin curls, and retwist the curls around the barrel of a curling iron. Consider it a worth-while project: Done correctly, this method makes curls that last for days.

Score Perfect, Frizz-Free Curls Beautiful, frizz-free curls require more than the right product- they also need to be properly styled. We spoke to Melissa Pratt of Ouidad Salon in NYC, who shares her fool-proof routine. -Always use a low pH cleanser like Clear & Gentle Shampoo from Ouidad. The proper technique: Massage the scalp and run your fingers through to the ends to remove any tangles, don't "bulk" it up and mush it around," says Pratt. -Squeeze hair gently with a towel, leaving most of the moisture in. -Apply styling product to wet hair. "Start from the bottom up- it will create more dimension than if you go from the top down," explains Pratt. Smooth the product into one section at a time and, once it's smooth, squeeze it down to the ends to seal the curl. Bring sections down as you move around the head and coax the front area to the side so it will fall just right. -Too add crown height, ad a few duckbill clips, standing them on their edge. "This helps balance the sides, which usually get big when hair is curly." -When finished applying product, scrunch hair gently to work the curl back in. "This is important because once your hair is dry, you need to leave it alone or the curls won't stay together and it will start to frizz." -If you dry hair with a diffuser, don't manipulate it too much. Or, you can let it air-dry or sit under a hood dryer.
