Being a mom to curly headed children, I often get asked what I do with their hair.
While having curls is an effortless gift my kids have been given, having healthy curls is a little bit more complicated and, the fact that they are all Dudes, doesn’t change that one bit.
Here are three things mamas to curly haired kiddos know (or need to know) about their kids’ hair…
1. Curly hair has a mind of its own. It’s cow licked, multi-textured, and sometimes just down right finicky. It doesn’t mean it can’t be trained, it means that you have to put your mind to it.
2. Curly hair needs extra care. Even my Dude’s straight-from-bed-look is a scientific exercise. We have to deep condition and detangle at night. It has to be finger brushed. He needs a good product. And then? He can wake up and enjoy his day without so much as a second thought. But, forgo any of this process and things get “mad-scientist-ey” with a quickness and I would quite literally need an atom bomb to get rid of the knots he’d have.
3. You have to teach kids to love it. You can’t go at it all hard, pulling at knots and cursing the tangles. You can’t trash talk it to your friends within earshot of them. You have to tell them that it is special, beautiful, and perfect; even on the days you are late for school and desperately dreading a comb out session. My #3 literally bursts into tears if I even mention cutting his hair because he loves it that much, it’s like saying I want to cut off his arm (he’s a 4 year old boy with a reptile obsession, he doesn’t entirely understand that arms don’t grow back, like lizard tails). It may seem slightly irrational, and we will deal with it in time, but I love that he loves every single part of himself, including his unique hair.
Looking for something to make your curly kid’s mane stronger and more healthy?
I love using the new Ouidad’s NEW Curl Co-wash on them.
It makes detangling a breeze, softens so nicely, adds shine, and smells spectacular too!
