Hello fellow Curlies! My name is Matt and I’m a Senior Editor focused on pop culture and viral content at popular website, Buzzfeed.com! You may have seen me show up a lot on your Facebook or Twitter newsfeeds. The 45 Most Powerful Images of 201148 Pictures That Perfectly Capture The ’90s, and The 25 Hottest Photos Of Ryan Gosling’s Beard are some of my most popular posts. You can also catch me on the small screen as a regular guest on HLN or appearances on NPRMTV and VH1.

Me and my curls at the Buzzfeed Headquarters

I have curly hair, but like many guys, I never really knew how to take care of it! Generally I just quickly shampoo and run out the door.

I have covered events from the Iowa Caucuses to Bonnaroo Music Festival for Buzzfeed.com…now I am documenting my curl discovery for all of you!

Recently, I visited The Curl Experts at the Ouidad New York Salon to get to know more about my curls!

The Morning Before – Sad Curls!

I walked in and was greeted by my stylist/curl guru, Vincent. I was so excited to get things started!

Getting my Curl Consultation from Vincent

Letting my curls dry slowly. It’s the healthy way to go!

The After Results! I even had time to stop by the Ouidad Corporate Office….

Here are some tips I learned  from Vincent that all curly guys can use….

1. Hot water is bad for my hair! I learned that you really shouldn’t wash your hair with hot water. If I want to take a hot shower, then I should first wash my hair with colder or luke warm water.

2. Make sure you REALLY rinse the conditioner out of your hair. I had no idea how important it was to really wash all of the conditioner out for my curl type. Tighter curl patterns or dry/dehydrated curls can leave a bit in for extra moisture!

3. I also learned a lot about my hair type. When you first go into a Ouidad Salon you have to take a questionnaire about your hair. Vincent went through my questionnaire and told me a lot of about my hair type. Turns out my hair is a lot different than I thought it was. I am more loose curly to wavy! My new favorite products are the Waterworks Clarifying Shampoo and PlayCurl Volumizing Conditioner. He also suggested adding a bit of PlayCurl Volumizing Foam on top, for an extra boost and definition.
4. Sweating isn’t so bad for my curls. I bike to work every morning from my apartment in Brooklyn to our offices in Manhattan and I ALWAYS wear a helmet. Sometimes the helmet can really mess up my hair. Fortunately, I sweat a lot. During my haircut I learned that sweat is actually a good thing. As long as my hair is sweaty, I can still style my hair. If it dries, then I’m really in trouble. My go to product after a biking session, is spraying Botanical Boost as soon as I get into the office. Definitely a must have refreshing spray for all curls.
5. No Towel Drying! Just gently blot your curls to absorb excess moisture. Using a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt is best to prevent friction resulting in frizz.
